What Gartner’s AI Predictions Mean for eFTI and the Future of Digital Freight Transport

· Peter Bresseleers

The digital transformation of freight transport is accelerating across Europe. At the same time, artificial intelligence is reshaping how organizations process information and make decisions. Recent strategic forecasts published by Gartner offer an interesting lens through which to view the emerging electronic Freight Transport Information (#eFTI) ecosystem. In its report ‘Strategic Predictions for 2026’, Gartner highlights how AI will increasingly influence business processes, governance structures and digital infrastructures across industries. (Source: https://www.gartner.com/en/articles/strategic-predictions-for-2026) Although the report focuses primarily on enterprise technology, several of its themes resonate strongly with developments in the European freight transport sector. In particular, the growing importance of trusted data infrastructures aligns closely with the objectives of #eFTI.

AI Needs Structured and Reliable Data

One of the key messages in Gartner’s predictions is that AI systems depend heavily on high-quality, structured and contextualized data. Without reliable data sources, even the most advanced algorithms struggle to produce meaningful results. Freight transport is a clear example. Today, transport documentation often still exists in fragmented formats such as PDFs, emails or paper documents. These formats limit interoperability and make automated processing difficult. The eFTI Regulation addresses this challenge by establishing a framework for the digital exchange of freight transport information between economic operators and authorities across EU Member States. Through standardized data models and certified digital platforms, eFTI transforms freight information from static documents into structured digital data that can be exchanged securely and efficiently.

Digital Ecosystems and Interoperable Platforms

Another theme highlighted in Gartner’s predictions is the emergence of digital ecosystems composed of multiple interoperable systems and intelligent agents. The architecture defined by the eFTI Regulation already reflects this ecosystem approach. The eFTI environment combines private eFTI platforms operated by certified service providers, national eFTI Gates operated by Member States, and harmonized EU data standards and exchange protocols. Together, these elements create a distributed digital infrastructure for freight transport information exchange.

Governance, Transparency and Trust

Gartner’s predictions also emphasize that the growing use of AI will increase the importance of governance, transparency and accountability in digital systems. In sectors such as transport and logistics, decisions based on digital information may affect regulatory compliance, inspections and enforcement activities. In this context, the traceability and reliability of underlying data become critical. The eFTI framework contributes to this objective by enabling standardized, verifiable and traceable information exchanges between companies and authorities.

A Strategic Data Infrastructure for Freight Transport

The primary objective of the eFTI Regulation is to reduce administrative burden and improve efficiency by allowing economic operators to share freight transport information electronically with authorities. However, in a broader digital context, eFTI can also be viewed as part of a larger transformation of freight transport data infrastructures in Europe. By creating a trusted environment for digital freight information exchange, eFTI contributes to improved interoperability across transport systems, more efficient regulatory processes and enhanced opportunities for digital innovation in logistics.

How We Can Support Public and Private Stakeholders

Our team supports both public authorities and private sector stakeholders in navigating the transition towards digital freight transport information systems. We assist Member States in preparing and implementing their eFTI Gate strategies, designing interoperable architectures, and aligning regulatory, technical and operational frameworks.

For logistics operators, platform providers and technology companies, we provide expert guidance on eFTI compliance, data interoperability, and the integration of digital freight information into broader data ecosystems. By combining policy expertise, technical understanding and practical project experience, we help organizations turn regulatory requirements into opportunities for innovation and future-ready digital logistics.
